Popstars Light Up the Grammys in Eyewear

15 Feb

Go big or go home seemed to be the theme at last night’s 53rd Annual Grammy Awards. Whether it was Lady Gaga’s bizarre arrival in a plastic egg, Cee Lo’s outrageous bird costume or Katy Perry’s sky-high swing performance, the stars went full throttle on music industry’s biggest night.

Besides killer performances, heartfelt acceptance speeches and emotional tributes, the evening was bursting with fashion. Though there certainly was a wide variety of attire, one thing was for sure—eyewear was the night’s must-wear accessory.

In case you missed it, here’s a rundown of the hottest trends:

Some of our favorite faces sported the quintessential aviator in a slew of fabulous shapes. John Mayer went for a clean, yet, sultry look with his shades while Marc Anthony, who presented the Record of the Year award with his bombshell wife, went for dark and mysterious.

Blacked out lenses were also a smash hit on plenty of popstars. La Roux’s vocalist Elly Jackson, who took home the Grammy for Best Electronic/Dance Album, channeled John Lennon round frames and Lady Gaga repped this trend in oversized cat-eyes while accepting her Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Album.

Sexy gradient lenses in smoky amber, rose and copper tints were a huge hit among rockers, rappers and R&B stars alike. The irresistible trend found itself on Usher, who took home two Grammy awards, Motley Crue’s bad boy Nikki Sixx, P Diddy, John Legend and LL Cool J, just to name a few.

Geek chic also had its time in the spotlight. B.o.B tore up the stage in a snazzy pair of specs with a bold browline. Kings of Leon member Nathan Followill donned retro round, black glasses with a keyhole bridge as he joined his fellow band mates to present Best Country Album.

Shields stole the show both onstage and in the audience. Usher and his teen protégé Justin Bieber danced the crowd into a frenzy during their highly anticipated performance, both wearing futuristic styles. Black Eyed Peas front man will.i.am. chilled out in a gold-rimmed pair with colored lenses.

Fa-BOO-lously Framed Halloween Costumes

28 Oct

The countdown is on: only one more day until the Halloween weekend is upon us. If you’re still scrambling for a spooktacular costume idea, look no further! We have the trendiest costume ideas with easy-to-follow tips at your disposal.

Harry Potter
If you’re anything like us, you’ve been swept up in the wizarding world of Harry Potter since its U.S. release over a decade ago. With Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows set to release November 19, now is the best time to pick up your wand, throw on your Hogwarts robes and hop on your Firebolt broomstick. Draw a lightning bolt scar on your forehead and don’t forget Harry’s signature specs—we recommend this wizard-chic frame from the GANT Rugger Collection.

The Situation
We have no doubt that there will be plenty of Mike “The Situation” Sorrentinos from MTV’s smash hit, Jersey Shore, GTL-ing this Halloween. Prep for a night of fist pumping with a super-bronzed spray tan, slicked back hair and for “T-Shirt Time,” wear an Ed Hardy tee. Wink at the ladies from behind a pair of plastic, flat-top Tommy Bahama aviators, and you’ll have the whole club beating that beat up.

Lady Gaga
Lady Gaga is known for her eclectic wardrobe and firecracker personality, which is probably why fans cherish the opportunity to emulate her style. While we don’t recommend you parade around in a meat dress, we do think that MYKITA’s “Yuri” sunwear line will make the Gaga-statement you’re looking for. Complete the look with ripped fishnets, plether booty shorts and a snug, fireman red shirt.

Kim Kardashian
Kim Kardashian, our favorite reality star, is the ideal costume for the girly-girls out there. Our tip: accessorize, accessorize, accessorize! Kim is always paparazzi ready in her oversized sunnies. Try a dramatic pair of shades, like these Bottega Veneta’s , with a low-swopping Kentucky Derby hat, killer 6-inch heels, decorated belt and flashy designer handbag. Don’t forget to smile for the camera!

Maverick
An oldie but goodie is Maverick, a young, and seriously smokin’, fighter pilot played by Tom Cruise in Top Gun. Guys, the girls will absolutely drool over you in this getup. What you need: a vintage fighter pilot jacket, backpack or side camo bag, watch and classic aviators—we suggest this classic Nautica frame. Even if you don’t win the costume contest, you’re sure to get a few new lady friends dressed as this badass pilot.

Specs and Shades at the VMAs

14 Sep

As always, there was no shortage of crazy fashion debuts at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards. While Lady Gaga has adopted raw meat as her latest fashion accessory, we recommend glamming it up sans cow byproducts and opting for a hot pair of sunnies or bold optical frames instead like the rest of these celebs.

Just like at the Emmy’s, aviators and wayfarers seemed to be the favored sunglass styles at the VMAs.

MTV’s infamous Jersey Shore cast wasn’t trying to escape the limelight, as usual. In his signature open-shirt stance, Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino showcased his washboard abs in a pair of oversized aviators with gradient lenses. Ronnie Ortiz-Magro was looking sharp in his navigators and Vinny Guadagnino kicked up the tough guy vibe in blacked out wayfarers.

Chuy Bravo, VMA host Chelsea Handler’s favorite sidekick, complemented his blue attire in a pair of gold-rimmed aviators with yellow mirrored lenses.

Pop icons and best buds, Usher and Justin Bieber both rocked black wayfarers to match their completely black ensemble. Usher went with the blacked out look while Justin went with smooth gradient lenses. Frequent collaborators Lil Jon and Kevin Rudolf wore similar thick-rimmed blacked out aviators to go with their rocker look. Winners of Best Rock Video for their song “Kings and Queens,” 30 Seconds to Mars looked futuristic in their frames with band members in flat tops, aviators and blacked out lenses.

Geek chic specs also made their mark on the evening.

All you “Gleeks” out there take note – both Amber Riley and Kevin McHale were seen rocking their nerdy frames. Amber was fabulously framed as she helped present the award for Best Pop Video in a black, sparkly tulle fringed dress that made for the perfect edgy look when paired with her frames. Kevin kept it preppy with a hipster edge in his thick black glasses and simple striped sweater atop a white collared shirt.

Matt Bennett, star of Nickelodeon’s show Victorious, went for the casual-grunge look, complete with messy curls and topped off with thick black frames.

LMFAO singer Redfoo definitely wins the prize for having the frames that make the biggest statement! Known for always dressing with flair, Redfoo turned it up a notch and wore purple and black zebra print shorts with a neon zip-up hoodie. He wrangled in his frizzy fro with a pair of gigantic white, graphic frames. You might not want to take it to Redfoo’s extreme, but you’ve got to love his fearless style.
